How UK tradespeople get paid the same day (pay links, cards, Direct Debit)
A pay link by text, a card on the doorstep, a Direct Debit for the regulars. The three ways UK trades get paid the same day, and when to use each.

Getting paid the same day is not a special favour from a good customer. It is what happens when paying is easier than not paying: a link in a text, a card reader that is already in your pocket, or a Direct Debit that takes the money without anyone remembering.
This post walks through the three methods, what each costs, and how they fit together so the invoice, the payment and the bookkeeping all reconcile without you typing anything twice.
Why you can get paid the same day now
Ten years ago the choice was cash, cheque or a bank transfer the customer promised to do "tonight". Today a card payment clears in seconds and a Direct Debit is set up from a phone in a minute. The tooling has caught up with the way small trades actually work: on site, on a phone, with no office to chase from.
The research behind this blog was clear that speed on a phone is the first thing UK tradespeople want from software, and money visibility is the second. Payment is where the two meet. The TradeYoke platform treats an invoice as something that carries its own payment method, so the "how do I pay" question is answered before it is asked.
The pay link by text
The simplest same-day method is a link. You finish the job, the invoice is generated from it, and a text or email goes to the customer with a link that opens a payment page. They tap, pay by card, and the invoice marks itself paid. No app for them to install, no bank details to copy.
The link works because it arrives while the job is fresh. A customer who has just watched you leave pays in the car park. The same customer three weeks later needs a reminder, and reminders are a whole other post: chasing late payments the polite way.

Card payments with Stripe
Cards suit one-off and reactive work: a boiler repair, a fuse board, a one-time garden clearance. The customer pays on the pay link or on the doorstep, and the money arrives in your account on Stripe's normal payout schedule. Fees are per transaction, so a quiet month costs nothing.
TradeYoke connects to your own Stripe account. The card payment lands against the invoice automatically through a signature-verified webhook, so you never mark a card payment paid by hand and never wonder whether one was missed.
Direct Debit with GoCardless for the regulars
Regular work is different. A window cleaning round or a monthly garden contract has the same customer paying a similar amount every few weeks, and the cost of collecting it is the real problem. Evening cash collections eat the hours you should be resting, and bank transfers arrive when the customer remembers.
Direct Debit fixes this. The customer authorises it once, and each visit's invoice is collected automatically. GoCardless charges roughly 1% on a £12 clean, which is less than the fuel for one collection round. We wrote up the round-level case in Direct Debit for window cleaners, and the same logic holds for gardening contracts.
The customer portal that does the reconciling
Some customers owe more than one invoice. A landlord with three properties, a contract customer who missed a month. Sending three links is clumsy. The customer portal shows them everything they owe on one page, with one pay-now button, and the payment settles against each invoice in turn.
Behind the portal is an immutable ledger. Every invoice and every payment is a line that cannot be edited, only added to, so what the customer sees, what you see, and what your accountant sees are the same numbers. Payments from Stripe or GoCardless settle themselves; cash you took on the doorstep is recorded on the phone and settles the same way.
Which method for which work
| Method | Best for | Customer effort | Cost model |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pay link (card) | One-off jobs, reactive callouts | Tap the link, enter a card | Per transaction (Stripe) |
| Card on the doorstep | Jobs where the customer is home | Tap or insert | Per transaction (Stripe) |
| Direct Debit | Rounds and monthly contracts | Authorise once, never again | Around 1% per collection (GoCardless) |
| Customer portal | Customers with several invoices | One page, one button | Whichever method they choose |
| Cash | Customers who insist | Hand it over | Free, but record it on the phone |
What it costs and what you need
Online payments and the bookkeeping sync are in TradeYoke Premium at £39 a month, and the customer portal comes with Ultimate at £55; see the pricing page for what sits in Essentials. Stripe and GoCardless are your own accounts with their own per-transaction fees, connected from the Payments tab in Settings. The 30-day trial is Essentials with no card; online payments unlock when you choose Premium or Ultimate.
If you want to see what the money looks like once it starts arriving on time, the morning who-owes-me email is the other half of this story.
Questions people ask
Do my customers need an app to pay a link?
No. The pay link opens a normal web page in their phone's browser. They enter a card and the invoice marks itself paid. The customer portal works the same way and shows every invoice they owe on one page.
Which is cheaper, card or Direct Debit?
For small regular amounts Direct Debit is usually cheaper: GoCardless charges around 1% on a £12 clean. For a one-off £400 job a card fee is simpler and the customer expects it. Both providers publish their fees; TradeYoke connects to your own accounts and adds no per-transaction fee of its own.
What happens to cash payments?
Record them on the phone against the invoice. Cash settles against the ledger exactly like a card or Direct Debit payment, so the customer's balance, your reports and your accountant file all agree.
Does a payment need re-typing into Xero or QuickBooks?
No. With the bookkeeping sync connected, invoices and their payments push to Xero, QuickBooks or FreeAgent and TradeYoke reads them back to confirm they landed. An event journal shows what went where.
